Rear Quarter Panel Replacement, Rear Filler Panel and Rust Repair on a 1972 Monte Carlo

The owner dropped off this amazing 1972 Monte Carlo for some repair. 

It's beautiful car and has an awesome story behind it as well.

The owner was the original owner!  He special ordered this car and chose all the options he wanted, including the unusual paint and then waited for it to be built.

In 1975 he traded it in for a new Monte Carlo.  In July of 2018 he located it just a few miles from his home and bought it back!

It is in really good shape, however there has been some craptacular repairs done to the rear quarter panels and there is the obvious rust under the vinyl top.  There is also rust in the lower rear of the front fenders to be repaired.

It looks so nice, but it's got to be taken apart to get rid of the ugly.

   







   


Things get ugly pretty quickly once the window trim is starting to come off.  Years of dirt has accumulated under the trim and under the vinyl top, it has held moisture and allowed the rust to become worse and worse.





   


As things come apart more and more cancer is exposed.



   






   

Not pretty, but most are a lot worse.


 
   


Took some time but the back glass finally came loose without breaking.  This is always scary for me, they will crack without any warning and ruin your day.




I thought this was pretty neat.  I haven't seen one before.

   


It's a plastic case for the bumper jack, it appears to have been for both Monte Carlos and Chevelles.

Montes and Chevelles are both GM  "A" bodies and share a ton of body parts.



   






   








   







 







The trunk floor appears to be in terrific condition, this is hardly ever the case.

There is a lot of surface rust from a couple mats that were laying
on the trunk floor.  One of them was still damp when I removed it.

I don't think it will require much more than a good wire wheeling, cleaning
and paint.
 





   


The areas of the trunk where the bumper mounts are bolted to the body are clean and strong.


Time to start taking it apart!




   

The rear bumper came off surprisingly without much of a hassle.



 


   

This was a very unexpected find!

I found two build sheets under the rear seat, both were pristine!
 
One was just setting in the springs and one had a couple hog rings through it.

I'm starting with the drivers side, so after the rear seat is out the side panel and sail panel or "earmuffs" as they are known.


   












Next we'll move on to removing the drivers quarter panel
Should be interesting!
